What is usually practiced and is learned through experience is how much is too much, when & how often such a process should be used during a plants life I defoliate but not to the extreme some may go so I say of course you do. Main point is open that canopy up cautiously but determinedly to get good light to that second layer of buds starving for it just under those leaves.
